Baby Signs Potty Training Made Easy

My daughter loves Baby Signs' Potty Training Made Easy system more than I do. I love it because it helps keep her excited about potty training, even though she's not allowed to use the toilet at daycare until she's two. When she had a nanny, she was going three times a day. But after going to daycare, her pottying slipped. Understandable, of course.

Potty Training Made Easy was created by Dr. Linda Acredolo and Dr. Susan Goodwyn, the creator's of the original Baby Signing program. Acredolo and Goodwyn have researched sign language and it's impacts on babies and young children. Their newest program helps parents potty train their children by the time they are two by using sign language.

The kit comes with a train-themed DVD (which my daughter begs to watch over and over and over). She also likes to sit on her potty and watch it. However, we had to end that practice because she has a tendency to get up and dance to the music. It also comes with a conductor's whistle that can be used to announce potty time, celebrate a successful potty time, or the child can blow it while sitting on the toilet to help hurry the biological processes up. Cool little trick!

The kit also comes with a "parent training" book with lots of helpful suggestions. Things like:

  • Don't ask your child if they need to go potty, they'll say "NO!" Just announce that it is Potty Time.
  • Don't force your child to sit on the toilet. It should be a good experience to make the process proceed more quickly.
  • Choose one time each day to practice (at first). Select a time when you child normally needs to go, and practice at that time so the child can have experience being successful.
  • Use sign language to help non-verbal kids communicate about toileting.
This program has given me more confidence in potty training. It has also made it more fun for the whole family. Now, my daughter regularly congratulates me with the "Good Job" sign when I used the toilet. Her encouraging voice and signs make me laugh every time.
